My blog, leannabenjamin.com, is a part of my social media platform: a hobby project that allows me to do what I love the most – write and perform!
For someone who spends most of their time in bed, too ill to go anywhere or see anyone, this platform gives me a context in which I can engage and socialise with people all over the world.
Here I will try to showcase my writing and crafting efforts; share my experience of Living With ME/CFS; inspire people to live better and more joyful lives; and to contribute to the public debate on accessibility, equality and social justice.
Thanks to my social media platforms, I can access parts of life that would otherwise be closed to me, and hang out with you all, so please join me on facebook and instagram too.
Unfortunately, maintaining a social media platform is not free. Domains, web hosting, writing, editing and the technology involved all cost money that I don’t have a lot of.
To keep my blog going, I need to make this little platform of mine somewhat self-sufficient. In other words, I need my blog to make a little money.
I want to be completely transparent in how I try to achieve this, which is why I have put together this little list of things you should be aware of. It covers money and other technicalities relating to my social media platform from A to Z:
Ads, Affiliations & Affiliate Links
I frequently write and talk about products/services I have used, things I recommend, places I like etc. I do this because I genuinely believe good things should be shared and promoted.
Most of the time when I do this, I’m neither sponsored by, nor affiliated with, the company I’m promoting. There are, however, examples of affiliate links in my content.
Affiliate links are hyperlinks to products/services that give me a small commission if you click on them and proceed to purchase said product/service. There is no extra cost to you for this, and your consumer’s rights are not affected. It just helps me make a few pennies towards to the cost of running the blog.
Where affiliate links appear, I always tag them as such to signpost what they are. You will also see a disclaimer statement on each page with affiliate links.
Please note, not all links on my blog are affiliate! I frequently include links in my posts, some of them to shops, products or services. If there is no tag indicating the link is affiliate, and no disclaimer notice, I get no money for them.
I am currently not signed up to Goodle AdSense, but I am a member of the Amazon Associates and eBay Partnership Programmes. You may therefore encounter links and ads to products from both of these companies, but they will always be clearly signposted as ads.
Most of the time, the ads you will encounter on my blog are for products/services mentioned in that particular post.
If I write something about my dear old friend Roy Francis, for example, I normally include links both to his book (affiliate link) and his music business, just like I did in the post Settle the Score.
In this example, the link to Roy’s book “How to Make Gospel Music Work for You” is an affiliate link taking you to amazon.co.uk. If you were to purchase the book through this link, Amazon would pay me a small percentage of the price of the book and any other purchase you make within 24 hours of clicking that link. pennies for the referral. The second link, however, takes you to “Roy Francis Productions.” This is not an affiliate link, and if you purchase a book or service through this link I get nothing in return. Even so, I post the link both because I like the idea of friends promoting each other; and because I believe this is a product/service that could be invaluable to some of my readers.

I often ask my followers to Help Me Help. This means that we are trying to raise much needed funds to help. for example, a fellow spoonie through times of particular hardship.
To date, we have managed to help fund powerchairs and manual wheelchairs, much needed family holidays; household appliances; mobility equipment and emergency cash for people whose benefits had been suspended in the review process or could not get their needs met by other means. Every single penny d0nated in these campaign has gone straight to the person we’ve tried to help.
